Where the red Tab was considered a trademark of the 501®, the brand wanted to differentiate other kinds of Levi's® clothing — such as the fashion denim, like bell-bottoms and boot cuts, which came out in the 1960s. With that, the Levi's® orange Tab was used to set these apart.
Orange Tab (1969-1999): Levi's introduced a budget-friendly line of fashion jeans — they were less expensive and less burly than worker jeans — that had an orange tab instead of a red one.
One out of 10 red Tabs on the back pocket of a pair of Levi's® jeans is with a blank red tab, only ® appears without the name Levi's. It is normal to see a ® red tab on Levi's® product.

The three most popular vintage styles are the 501, 505, and 517, Hillman confirms. You can find it stamped on the leather patch on the back or on the tag inside. All three were originally designed for men, they're all extremely flattering on the butt, and they're all coveted. Yet, each one is slightly different.
Legend has it that Jacob Davis originally insisted that the thread be orange to match the jean's copper rivets.
Levi's Orange Tab was for fashion jeans, White Tab was generally for Levi's For Gals (except it was also for corduroy).

How do you tell if Levis are worth a lot?
A big 'E' on the Levis' tab is more valuable than a little 'e' Selvage edges on a jean's inside cuff is also a high-value indicator. A leather patch is worth more than a paper patch on the back of the jeans. Collectors also look for concealed copper rivets.

After the addition of a buyer's premium, the duo paid $87,400 for the jeans in total. The jeans were first discovered in an abandoned mineshaft in the American West and date back to the 1880s. They are covered with flecks of candle wax, but some of the original details are still visible.

1970S - 1980S: STREAMLINED AND DIY
For the Levi's® 501®, this meant a move away from the maximalism of flaring, fringe, and psychedelic colors and a move towards the fitted, washed out, worn out—and in many cases torn up—look of icons of the time like Patti Smith and her downtown cohort.
The company's most spectacular growth occurred after 1946, when it decided to abandon wholesaling and concentrate on manufacturing clothing under its own label. By the 1960s, Levi's and other jeans—once worn chiefly by American cowboys—had become popular worldwide.

But the biggest difference between then and now is price. In the height of the Jordache sales boom, during the 1980s, the average price of the tight-fitting jeans was about $26 — a relative fortune in those times.
Simply put, denim shrinks. I'm sure a lot of you have seen 'shrink to fit' on a Levi's label and that's what it means. When you wash and dry your Levi's they shrink. Vintage Levi's have already been worn, washed, & shrunk so that work is out of the way for you.
501 was the number chosen to designate the first copper-riveted denim overalls Levi Strauss & Co. produced in 1890, and that's about where knowledge about the numbers ends.
However, the 'ripped' trend came much later, as part of a social movement in 1970s. The cuts and the incisions over the jeans were made as mark of anger towards society. This came to be seen as political movement. Madonna among other celebrities popularised the trend, and soon fans started following the trend.
But as hidden rivets eventually tear their way through even the toughest denim. In the mid-1960s, Levi's removed rivets on the back pockets of their jeans for good, replaced by bartacks.

Do Levi's get better with age?
But why do quality jeans seem to get better with age? Well, according to Jill Guenza, the VP of Women's Design at Levi's, it's got to do with the unique characteristics of denim fabric. “The weight and weave of denim fabric has a molding effect, conforming to the particular contours of your body,” Guenza said.
Do you see our famous red tab? Is the word LEVI'S® in all capital letters, or does it have a small letter “e” instead? The Tab with LEVI'S (also known as “Big E”) means the jeans are from before 1971. Look for Care Tags: Care tags began being added to Levi's garments in the 1970s.
Authentic Levi's almost always have the jean style number stamped onto the back of the top button, which then matches the care label. Fakes won't have this aspect and if they have a number stamped, they probably won't match the label. Quality of stitching is also a big indicator.
The average lifespan for a pair of jeans, according to the International Fabric Institute Fair Claims Guide, is 2-3 years.
