Dr. Seuss envisioned him as a hermit who lived in a cave and "Grinch" as a nickname instead of a species name.

The Grinch, portrayed by Jim Carrey, is 6'2” (1.88 m) tall. The Grinch lives on the top of Mount Crumpit, which overlooks the town of Whoville.
Unfortunately, The Grinch himself is based on a real person — his creator, children's literary icon Theodor Seuss Geisel, who wrote under the pseudonym Dr. Seuss. Geisel was brushing his teeth on the morning after Christmas in December 1956 when he noticed he didn't feel right.

Martha May Whovier is a major character in the live-action adaptation of Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
The Grinch arrives at Whoville by mistake and is adopted by two elderly sisters. Ridiculed and bullied in school, The Grinch ran away to live a solitary life. Thwarted in love, he is sad and lonely and ultimately just wants to fit in.
The trauma the Grinch experienced as a young boy led to his adult isolation, his disdain for Whoville and the holiday season. He goes around tripping people, crushing their snowmen, and cheating in simple games like chess.
Instead of a frightened, timid dog who reluctantly does the Grinch's bidding, Max is very much loving and loyal to the Grinch. He's different than his 1966 and 2000 version.
In "The Grinch Meets His Max," it was revealed that the Grinch took Max in as his pet when Max started scratching an itchy part of the Grinch's back that he couldn't reach.
It seems equally implausible that Max was a stray that just happened to wander all the way up to the Grinch's hermit lair overlooking Whoville, a place, by the way, in desperate need of an extreme home makeover. However it happened, one thing is clear: Max puts up with some serious abuse.

The Grinch is a grumpy recluse being which lives close to the microscopic village of Whoville, believed to be located entirely within a dust speck (a snowflake in the movie adaptation). He looks similar to the native Whos, only covered in more hair - usually portrayed as green but colored white in the original book.

Lily plays messages that are still on it, and hears a message from Ted to Marshall telling him to get over Lily. In this message, Ted calls Lily "a very, very bad word" which is substituted in future Ted's re-telling of the story with the word "grinch".
When Geisel's famous book was published in 1956, the Grinch was black and white. Rumor has it Jones was inspired to make the evil character green in the special after he rented a car painted in an ugly shade of the color.
